Recruited brown adipose tissue as an antiobesity agent in humans.

Brown adipose tissue (BAT) burns fat to produce heat when the body is exposed to cold and plays a role in energy metabolism. Using fluorodeoxyglucose-positron emission tomography and computed tomography, we previously reported that BAT decreases with age and thereby accelerates age-related accumulation of body fat in humans. Thus, the recruitment of BAT may be effective for body fat reduction. ...

Brown adipose tissue as a potential therapeutic target in obesity therapy

Strategies to curb the increase in obesity are warranted in order to effectively prevent its associated metabolic complications. Activation of the thermogenic capacity of brown adipose tissue (BAT) in combination with a stable energy intake is a promising approach to effectively reduce body weight. Recent scientific advances have demonstrated that BAT can be found in adult humans and that human...

Brown adipose tissue

Obesity is currently a global pandemic, and is associated with increased mortality and co-morbidities including many metabolic diseases. Obesity is characterized by an increase in adipose mass due to increased energy intake, decreased energy expenditure, or both. While white adipose tissue is specialized for energy storage, brown adipose tissue has a high concentration of mitochondria and uniqu...

Synaptotagmin 4: A New Antiobesity Target?

In this issue of Neuron, Zhang et al. show that Synaptotagmin 4 (Syt4) is specifically induced in adult hypothalamic oxytocin neurons by high-fat diet. Evidence is provided to support a critical role for Syt4 in negative regulation of oxytocin release, which in turn is responsible for diet-induced obesity, raising the possibility of using Syt4 as a new antiobesity target.

Brown Adipose Tissue Bioenergetics: A New Methodological Approach

The rediscovery of brown adipose tissue (BAT) in humans and its capacity to oxidize fat and dissipate energy as heat has put the spotlight on its potential as a therapeutic target in the treatment of several metabolic conditions including obesity and diabetes. To date the measurement of bioenergetics parameters has required the use of cultured cells or extracted mitochondria with the correspond...
